Avatar impresses, Hong Kong does more…

A group of co-workers went to see Avatar last night as one of our Hong Kong colleagues informed us there was an extreme screen which provided the 3D hit in 4D. We got wet, had bubbles coming out of the ceiling, had fans blowing and had smoke coming out from under the screen. I think they could have taken this even further and really made it into an experience. If you have ever been to the Shrek 3D experience at Brisbane, Australia’s Warner Bros. World you will have felt the mist and shaking chairs. I think that having shaking chairs in Avatar would have really added to the experience. More water and smoke would have really been great. There really is an opportunity here. As for the movie, the 3D effects were good and the story was nice, if basic and predictable. I do not think it has the depth to carry it to an Oscar victory. It looks like Mr. Cameron might lose out to his ex-wife. Now there is a storyline with some intrigue.

Quick hits of the day:

– Katie Couric is pulling in $14m/year. An angry staffer pointed out this could pay 200 newsmen and women $75,000/year. WOW! I’ll take the 200.

– I saw where someone is saying Tiger Woods will make a “shock” return soon. Seriously, no shock from thelockhart. I’ve been saying that since Thanksgiving. He’s back before the Masters and will win the green jacket.

– Gotta love the Tail of the Tiger golf balls.

– National signing day for college football yesterday: how much corruption and backdoor dealing went into that process?

– The Tigers have reportedly re-signed Justin Verlander. And it cost more than King Felix. Well, it’s Detroit right now, it’s going to cost more to keep players.

– The Lions are pushing Larry Foote out. I know DeAndre Levy finished strong, but there is no way I don’t want Foote around for another couple of years. Fix it Mayhew.

– New favorite Mexican (thanks to the Extra Mustard at CNNSI.com) = Ninel Conde. Google it.

– Architectural Digest has a coup of a cover coming out…Jennifer Aniston touting her remodeled Beverly Hills mansion. Ok, so no one is rushing to the store to buy Architectural Digest, but still, that’s kind of impressive.

Goodnight and God Bless,
